Plymouth Residents: Good News for your wallet and the environment!
Neglecting a failed septic system has many obvious implications related to the environment, public health and safety. Not as important, but certainly in the forefront of a homeowner with a failed septic system, is the financial cost of the repair. What many homeowners with failed septic systems may not be aware of is the availability of a low interest loan, available to Plymouth homeowners, to fix their failed system.
There is an article for approval at the spring Town Meeting that would authorize the Town of Plymouth Office of Community Development to obtain a twelfth loan through the Massachusetts Water Pollution Abatement Trust for $200,000. With this loan, the Town will continue to offer qualified homeowners low interest loans to repair their failed septic system.
This program is very popular, 255 homeowners have already taken advantage of it. There are some funds left from the past 11 rounds of previous loans obtained by the Town of amounts ranging from $200,000- $400,000. The latest loan would ensure the program is extended for the foreseeable future. It seems the popularity stems from the fact that owners with credit problems can still apply and the loans carry a relatively low interest rate.
Keep your eyes out for the Town meeting vote sometime on or just after April 2. Timing is everything, and while there is no good time to repair your septic system, it may be a good time to take advantage of this loan program while the rates are still low, easing the financial burden for such an important repair.
